TOXIC FOODS, PLANTS, ETC.

Our pets can be exposed to many hazardous household products.  The ASPCA lists the top 10 pet poisons as people food, plants, human and veterinary medications, *insecticides, rodenticides,chemicals, cleaning products, heavy metals and fertilizer. 

Signs your pet may have ingested a toxin include vomiting, diarrhea, urination, drooling, excessive thirst, panting, seizures, shaking, hyperactivity and irregular heart rhythm.  Sometimes, animals may appear normal for days after ingesting a toxin.

If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance, remain calm and collect a sample of their vomit and the suspected substance if known.  Proceed to your vet's office.  It may be beneficial to call and let them know you are on your way so they can prepare for your pet and be able to respond more quickly in the event of an emergency situation.

*Note on flea control products.  Use extreme care with these products.  Make sure you are using the proper dose for the size of your animal.  Always use products on appropriate species.  Never use a product intended for a dog on a cat.  Be weary of over-the-counter products.  Their safety is not regulated as well as products you get from your vet.  Often they do not work very well and owners end up exceeding the proper dose.  Do not combine products.  This includes flea shampoos and flea collars.
